What is Intelligence?

Dispelling the Myth

The biggest “sticking point” in the Analysis of Intelligence begins with the misunderstanding about intelligence in general. “Gather Intelligence” is a term that is often misused. In the world of glamourized movies, it congers up an air of mystery and brings to mind images of covert characters and complex plots.  But…

Information is not Intelligence

Most people believe that you gather intelligence yet nothing could be further from the truth.   You gather raw data, process it and analyze it to produce intelligence that is useable by management and the investigators.

Distilling the Truth

Most approaches to solving crimes begin with a premise, which is then proven to be true or not. We start at the other end of the process. Rather than having a believed resolution we need to prove, we let the data take the lead. We simply focus on finding the truth in the information we gather. The idea in any investigation is to collect as much information as possible to try to disconfirm or disprove the hypotheses, not to confirm them.  By disconfirming, we let the garbage fall away and we are left only with the truth.
